The second stage of the dental implant process is the preparation stage. Prior to the dental implant surgery, there are a number of things that patient should or should not do. To start with a dentist or oral surgeon may prescribe an antibacterial mouthwash with the ingredient chlorhexidine in it before the implant process. Also, a patient may be required to take antibiotics prior to the surgery especially if their jaw bone is prone to infections. Smoking any time before the procedure is not advisable as smoking may interfere with the process. Additionally, a patient will have to take a full breakfast before the process.

The surgery

In case of a rotten or dead tooth, it will have to be removed first. The process will require the use of local anesthesia. The process of removing a rotten or dead tooth will be separate from the dental implantprocess.

Once the tooth has been removed or in case there are no teeth to be removed, a dentist or oral surgeon will administer anesthesia. This will cause a patient to be numb and will not feel the pain only slight pressure and uncomfortable feelings. Once the anesthesia has been administered the dentist will make a small incision in the gum. Through this incision, the dentist will drill a hole in the jaw bone.
